On Thursday, June 11th MSN ’s UK tech site broke a story, interviewing Professor Ben Light of the University of Salford on the new Master’s degree in ‘Social Media.’ People will now have the option to have an MA in Facebook and Twitter.
Really!?!
Really, University of Salford!?! Are you seriously sending your students into the ultra-competative workforce of a world on the brink of economic collapse, arming them with a tremendous debt to pay off and a MA in Facebook!?!
Really. You should look into purchasing some late night flight time on cable, airing your commercial for the program, ”At Facebook U, you can earn your degree while gaining real-world skills in status updates, photo tagging, and fan clubs!”
Really, Professor Light!?! Is the course being continuously improved based on real-time student feedback through the proven “like” rating system? Maybe your final exams could be a series of those “Which state should you live in” or “What crazy animal would you be?” quizzes. Really.
And really, grad student enrolling in the course!?! You stuck around during orientation even after the pressure of being evaluated on something called a “follow curve.” Are you aware that people like you put the “twit” in Twitter? Really. The only hash your college experience will include won’t fit into a bong.
Really? Your course essays are on topics such as, “25 things, 25 more things, 10 most important albums of your life.” Really?
You were really surprised that you couldn’t get a job with an MA in social media? Oh well, you can always create an application that will provide you with tasty cupcakes to eat and clothing. And if all else fails, I’m sure you’ll stumble across an advertisement that can show you how to make $500/day right from home! Really.
